How to Use Podcasts

Podcasts are free and there are a gazillion of them.

Screen Shot 2020-10-03 at 12.21.20 PM.png

Virtually any topic you can think of. You set up a subscription and they are automatically loaded into your device. And you can find really cool people , like Ellen Goodman !

They download so you can listen to them, while you’re on a walk.

If your Mac System is up to date, a Podcast App is already installed. (If not, you can find them in iTunes app)

And you can click this link, to install it on your iOS phone or iPad.

If you have iCloud, they will sync between all devices.

What as ICS button

I don’t know what it stands for but, it can save you time.

It will put an event in your calendar program.

For example, if you’re on the Events Calendar and click it, your computer will offer to add to your calendar.

Depending on what kind of calendar you use, you can click Google Calendar or ICS (Mac)

This is what the Events Calendar Page looks like.

On a Mac, after you approve the download, you’ll click OK to add to your calendar.

Do you back up your computer ?

If you’ve ever had that sinking feeling of losing a digital file, you hopefully then started backing up your computer. If you haven’t lost a file (or a computer), its only a matter of time before it happens. So, backing up your computer is a good thing to start doing.

Here’s a look at Apple’s Time Machine - you can find similar methods on your computer manufacturer’s website.

Here’s Apple’s Time Machine page with basic instructions

iCloud - what's a cloud ?

You hear the term used a lot. It’s just a computer (somewhere) which stores your stuff - outside of your computer and outside of our house. And, to add to the confusion - there are lots of clouds - Google, Dropbox, Microsoft, Apple and many others.

The reason most people need a cloud is, to backup (copy) your stuff to a safe place, in case your computer breaks or you drop your phone overboard. If this happens, you can go to your cloud storage and get back the info you stored there. That could be a big deal.

Since a lot of people have iPhones, here’s Apple’s instructions on backing up your iPhone to Apple iCloud. You create an iCloud account ( free basic service but they will be very happy to sell you more storage).

Check with your phone’s website for their cloud suggestions.

Here’s general explanation of iCloud (it does way more than back up)

Barrie Sheperd - New Advent/Christmas book

I have just a few copies of A Way with Words, my Christmas 2021 poetry collection, left on the shelves, and five days to go before the book becomes out of date.
You have probably already purchased a copy, or copies, in good time for your Xmas list. But might someone have been forgotten? Or have you just remembered a friend who would appreciate a small selection of verse to add depth and height, plus an occasional smile, to these rare and holy days?
Help me clear off my shelves. Order another copy - or two - and increase the checks to the food pantries. They are not exactly pricey at $10 per copy (plus $2 postage) and $7 of that price goes to help feed the hungry. And by the way, poetry will never go out of date.

Nativity Play

Amid humble shepherds,
majestic kings, awkward angels
with their bent-coat-hanger halos,
my most unforgettable character
is the tender-hearted lad
assigned to play inn keeper
who undid the whole production
when he assured the wandering couple,
“You folks are so, so lucky.
We just had a cancellation.”

TIPS: What's an ICS or Google Calendar link ?

Screen+Shot+2020-07-28+at+9.26.26+AM.jpg

When visiting websites like the Events Calendar - you might notice and ICS or Google Calendar link.

If you click these, they will allow you to auto insert the date/time into your calendar. If you have more than one calendar, it will give you a choice.

Here’s a screenshot for an Ellsworth Miller Lectures Series Event.

Notice the ICS and Google Calendar options.

Now you can FaceTime Android or Windows users

Non-Apple people have a reason to celebrate: The days when you needed an iPhone, iPad or Mac to join a FaceTime video call are all but over. In a move widely seen as Apple's answer to Zoom video calls, the software giant has made it possible for people who have Android phones and Windows laptops to hop on FaceTime calls -- no iPhone required.

If the recipient is tech savvy, they can send you their code (like a barcode)

VENMO is a service where you can easily send

money to others.

We found it helpful when a delivery arrived, containing things for three different families.

Once you set up the account (linking a debit card), you can easily send money to someone else.

Apple Pay is another similar service which also does handsfree payment in certain stores.

Easier then writing a check or taking out a credit card.

Please leave a comment if you have experience with either.

TIPS: How to scan documents on your iPhone or iPad

With today’s changing world, you might need to send a document over the web.

You could take a picture but scanning it gives you more options.

Here’s a simple method (there are other features which are presented on other YouTube videos)

You can actually sign or markup the document before sending. And, if you have an iCloud account, it can sync back to your Mac.

Welcome to the Chebeague Community Church!-Postponed

This evening, I consulted with leaders in the Chebeague Community Church over Zoom, and we talked about the rising number of COVID cases here on the island. The church’s priority throughout the pandemic has been to do our part in keeping people safe. In light of this, I have decided that worship for tomorrow (Sunday, September 12th) will be held via Zoom (link below) and that we will postpone our community-wide celebration until Sunday, October 10th (over Indigenous People’s Day weekend).

My heart is heavy as I make this decision, as I know it would have been lovely to celebrate together as an in-person community as we take this step forward in being a community church. I am comforted, however, by the fact that the church is more than a building or a physical gathering space; it is a people, working in various places throughout our community to bring God’s light, hope, and peace to all we encounter.

I will continue to monitor COVID cases and the situation as it evolves, and will pray that we can reconnect with one another again soon. I hope to have you join us virtually at 10 AM as we worship our God together.
— Melissa Yosua-Davis
