Wagoneers -History and Crazy

In 2002, at the dawn of digital music recording, the Wagoneers and I recorded a bunch of songs. We are finding some new ones and having others remastered for a new tribute album. The version of Crazy (below) has just been updated and you can hear the sparkle.

If you’re not familiar with them, for over half a century - The Wagoneers made people dance. Brother Ross, Gary Ross, Med and Marlene Bowen.

HISTORY- listen to them talk about their early days

CRAZY - my understanding is this was recorded by Malcom Rice in 1970. Technology was a little wobbly back then but you can hear the nuances in Marlene’s wonderful delivery. She told me she that when she met Willie Nelson (who wrote it) she told him “I sing it better than you do” - she was right !

Casco Bay Islands Transit District- Update

Casco Bay Islands Transit District is working with CBL staff to review the Down Bay summer schedule. The current schedule was instituted last year, to be reviewed after one year. There will be a second public hearing set for March 7th (public notice to follow) at CBL to discuss input from the public, the shore staff, Captains, and management. We looking to receive input from all the DB users.

The initial meeting last month received some great input and it was agreed in general that the schedule may require some tweaks versus a major overhaul. The general consensus was that the staff gained some insight and they will work those ideas into a new proposed schedule, if doable. The major areas discussed focused on; efficient use of boats and crews, freight handling on shore and islands, inter-island transport plus the convenience of commuters and island business staffs. We became well versed that any tweaks can have unintended consequences to other areas of the operation.

If you have any input you would like to share, please send it along to your DB island representatives. Any and all input will be appreciated but try to limit to summer schedule issues.

World War 11 V-Disc

For military members deployed during World War II, familiar entertainment from beloved musicians was hard to find.

Enter V-Disc, a record label created by the American military during World War II to boost soldier morale while abroad. From 1943 to 1949, many popular artists recorded with friends and acquaintances at rival record labels. By the end of the decade, however, the masters had been destroyed and any existing V-Discs at military bases discarded.

Luckily, the Internet Archive’s Great 78 Project features a large number of these V-Disc recordings, which range from military marching songs to love ballads, and big band to swing. Below are just a handful of the V-Discs available to browse–but you can see the full collection here!

Barrie Sheperd - New Advent/Christmas book

I have just a few copies of A Way with Words, my Christmas 2021 poetry collection, left on the shelves, and five days to go before the book becomes out of date.
You have probably already purchased a copy, or copies, in good time for your Xmas list. But might someone have been forgotten? Or have you just remembered a friend who would appreciate a small selection of verse to add depth and height, plus an occasional smile, to these rare and holy days?
Help me clear off my shelves. Order another copy - or two - and increase the checks to the food pantries. They are not exactly pricey at $10 per copy (plus $2 postage) and $7 of that price goes to help feed the hungry. And by the way, poetry will never go out of date.

Nativity Play

Amid humble shepherds,
majestic kings, awkward angels
with their bent-coat-hanger halos,
my most unforgettable character
is the tender-hearted lad
assigned to play inn keeper
who undid the whole production
when he assured the wandering couple,
“You folks are so, so lucky.
We just had a cancellation.”

Now you can FaceTime Android or Windows users

Non-Apple people have a reason to celebrate: The days when you needed an iPhone, iPad or Mac to join a FaceTime video call are all but over. In a move widely seen as Apple's answer to Zoom video calls, the software giant has made it possible for people who have Android phones and Windows laptops to hop on FaceTime calls -- no iPhone required.

Welcome to the Chebeague Community Church!-Postponed

This evening, I consulted with leaders in the Chebeague Community Church over Zoom, and we talked about the rising number of COVID cases here on the island. The church’s priority throughout the pandemic has been to do our part in keeping people safe. In light of this, I have decided that worship for tomorrow (Sunday, September 12th) will be held via Zoom (link below) and that we will postpone our community-wide celebration until Sunday, October 10th (over Indigenous People’s Day weekend).

My heart is heavy as I make this decision, as I know it would have been lovely to celebrate together as an in-person community as we take this step forward in being a community church. I am comforted, however, by the fact that the church is more than a building or a physical gathering space; it is a people, working in various places throughout our community to bring God’s light, hope, and peace to all we encounter.

I will continue to monitor COVID cases and the situation as it evolves, and will pray that we can reconnect with one another again soon. I hope to have you join us virtually at 10 AM as we worship our God together.
— Melissa Yosua-Davis
