The Island Video -read the comment from Jeff Feeney

Screen Shot 2021-02-06 at 4.40.06 PM.png

It’s been a tough year and, like always, the people of Chebeague came through with countless acts of kindness and caring.

We thought it would be fun to assemble some video and pictures of organizations and people who love Chebeaugue.

There was so much to look at, we decided to make two videos.

The first is finished. Barrie Shepherd reads the poem he wrote for it. Just click the picture above.

The second is the selfies and will be finished soon.

Thank you to all who helped. It is not too late if you (wherever you are) want to send in a selfie and get in the second video and place your name in the Raffle.

The Island” by J. Barrie Shepherd

Distancing defines us
here on this cherished plot of earth –
this ledge of forest, rock and beaches
set apart by nature’s liquid realm –
a separation that provides its own protection,
a solitary, salutary distancing from disease,
all those too familiar perils of
this season of pandemic.

Those who live here chafe, at times,
against the time and effort that it takes
to reach the business of the mainland.
But those necessary miles create community,
foster a blessed sense of “All In This Together.”
lend strength to all those inconvenient measures –
donning masks, scrubbing hands, standing six feet
or more apart – that help keep us safe,
shape care for one another, show forth
precisely what it means to truly be
and live, embrace community.

Then thank God for distance –
open seas and rugged shores –
and for the spirit of Chebeague
that brings us all together,
even while holding us apart..

MAKING CONNECTIONS AT COLEMAN'S COVE

MAKING CONNECTIONS AT COLEMAN'S COVE

with Donnal Miller Damon - Chebeague Island Historical Society

Free Walking Tour Saturday, May 6 at 11:00 AM

Estimated duration: 90 minutes

For the second year, the Chebeague Island Historical Society is participating in Jane's Walk, an international day that celebrates community by encouraging people to learn more about the place they live. Last year the CIHS toured the East End, and this year participants will have an opportunity to learn more about the evolution of the Coleman Cove Neighborhood. There is no fee for a Jane's Walk.

If you plan to join the walk, please pre register by sending an email to Chebeaguehistory@gmail.com to make sure we have enough handouts. The walk is limited to no more than 20 people. We will host another tour at a later date, if there is enough interest.

Coleman's Cove has a long fishing history, but it was also a transportation hub—home to two steamboat wharves. In addition, there was once a store, a boarding house, a gas pump, and almost a church! While erosion threatens the road and a shell midden, part of the Cove is protected by a conservation easement and public access to a sand beach adjacent to a deep water anchorage. Join the walk and learn about this neighborhood’s connected history!

Accessibility: This is a walking tour but is accessible by golf cart if required.

Starting and ending point: The intersection of South Road and South Shore Drive.

Casco Bay Islands Transit District- Update

Casco Bay Islands Transit District is working with CBL staff to review the Down Bay summer schedule. The current schedule was instituted last year, to be reviewed after one year. There will be a second public hearing set for March 7th (public notice to follow) at CBL to discuss input from the public, the shore staff, Captains, and management. We looking to receive input from all the DB users.

The initial meeting last month received some great input and it was agreed in general that the schedule may require some tweaks versus a major overhaul. The general consensus was that the staff gained some insight and they will work those ideas into a new proposed schedule, if doable. The major areas discussed focused on; efficient use of boats and crews, freight handling on shore and islands, inter-island transport plus the convenience of commuters and island business staffs. We became well versed that any tweaks can have unintended consequences to other areas of the operation.

If you have any input you would like to share, please send it along to your DB island representatives. Any and all input will be appreciated but try to limit to summer schedule issues.
